Lem Overpeck, 91, died peacefully on April I0, 2003 at his home in Sandstone Assisted Living, Spearfish, South Dakota. He was surrounded with the love Of his family and the tender care of his friends.

Lem Franklin Overpeck was born September 18, 1911 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota to Tyler S. and Lulu ‎(Temple)‎ Overpeck. He spent his childhood in youthful adventure, hunting, fishing and enjoying life with many close companions in Belle Fourche and at Sand Creek, Wyoming. He graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1930. He graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1936 and returned to Belle Fourche to practice law with Dan McCutcheon.

In 1938 he met Helen Elizabeth Brewer, a physical education instructor at Black Hills Teacher's College. He loved this fine lady from the first moment until his dying day. On August 22, 1939 in Ironton, Ohio, they were united in marriage. From that union, four daughters were born: Gretchen, Janifer, Lizabeth and Marylu. Lem was both protector and provider. Helen and his daughters were the center of his world and he was the foundation of theirs.

During World War II, Lem served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Air Corps as legal officer at Corpus Christi, Texas. Becoming a lawyer was a natural progression for Lem. As a young man, he often wandered to the Butte County Court House to watch some of the most prominent trial attorneys of his day in action in courtroom. The lessons he learned there served as a guide for his success as a "country" trial lawyer. Anyone who had ever observed him in the courtroom knew they has witnessed "a master'. He was tough and forthright when necessary, as well as compassionate and caring to those whom he served. He was a lawyer for all men from cattlemen to cororations. He preferred to defend, but was an astute prosecutor. He was a sixty-seven year member of the South Dakota Bar Association and served as its president in 1971-1972. He was also a member of the Wyoming Bar Association, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Association, and the International Society of Barristers. In South Dakota law, he was a "living legend".

Lem was a lifelong Republican. He began his political activism as a small boy delivering political fliers door-to-door in his wagon. He loved our political process and believed in the way it works. His beliefs were strongly held, even as a very young boy he refused to march with his Boy Scout troop when the Ku Klux Klan organized a parade in Belle Fourche. He ran for office and represented the Republican Party many times in his lifetime. He was elected State's Attorney in Butte County. He served as state senator from Butte County. He was twice elected as South Dakota's Lieutenant Governor, serving from 1964 to 1968. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was elected president of the National Association of Lieutenant Governors. He also served in many roles in the Republican Party including county chairman and a three-time delegate to the Republican National Convention.

Lem Overpeck was president of the South Dakota Board of Regents, a 50+ Mason and Shriller and 50+ member of the American Legion. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. He was an avid fly fisherman and summer resident of Sand Creek, Wyoming since 1913.

Lem was a loving caring husband and father. He had a renowned sense of humor and a lively twinkle in his eye. He was blessed with many good friends whose company he cherished. He was a true gentleman until his last moment on this earth.

Grateful for every moment they shared his life are his daughters and their husbands, Gretchen ‎(and James)‎ Haahr, Janifer ‎(and Grant)‎ Farquhar, Lizabeth ‎{and Michael)‎ Manning, Marylu ‎{and Roger)‎ Ledebuhr; grandchildren, Karen Bump, Tyler Haahr, Ellen Moore, Jeff Farquhar, Sara Farquhar, Liza Manning, Amanda Hultgren, Tim Manning, Josh Ledebuhr, Krista Ledebuhr; a nephew, Glenn Broadhurst; and seven great-grandchildren.

Lem was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; three sisters, Hazel Foster, Charyl Bjornson, Emma McClure; a nephew, Mike McClure.

A celebration of Leto's life was held on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at St. James Episcopal Church in Belle Fourche followed by interment at the Black Hills National Cemetery. A Lem Overpeck Memorial Scholarship has been established.
